Versions: studio and garage
Keep your work safe, try things out, and decide what the real version of the song is.
AMPLE remembers your work. Every time you save, a new revision is added to the history, and you can always go back. On top of that, AMPLE gives you two places to work: the garage and the studio.
- The garage is where you work. Every save lands here, so you can try anything.
- The studio is the main version: the one you would call "the real song". It only changes when you decide.
The little labels in the header tell you where you are: on: garage is the line you are working on, and ★ studio shows the revision the main version points at.
Checkpoints#
A checkpoint is a snapshot that you take yourself, with a name, before something risky. Press Checkpoint in the header, name it, and you can come back to exactly this moment later. A checkpoint changes nothing else.
The History panel#
Open the History tab at the bottom. It draws every revision as a dot on a line. The ring marks here (where you are) and the star marks the studio.

At the top left of the panel are the two buttons that move the studio:
- Make this the main version (promote): the studio becomes what the garage is now. Before it does anything, AMPLE lists exactly what will change. The old studio stays in the history, so nothing is lost.
- Start a new try (fork): start a new line of work from the main version, as a new garage. What you had on the old garage stays in the history.
Looking without touching#
Double-click a revision to go there, or choose Look only to see an old state without changing anything: AMPLE then says "Read-only" and refuses to build or save until you leave.
You now know the basics. The dictionary has every word of this guide, and the reference help (the Help link in the header) describes every block and every setting.
